How to Get the Most Out of Your Therapy Sessions

July 1, 2025

Written by: Lauren Martin

Whether you’ve been to therapy before, or you’re starting out for the first time, every experience in counseling is unique. Beginning therapy is both a time and financial commitment to yourself, so it’s important that your needs are being met in your sessions. Here are some tips as to how you can get the most out of your therapy sessions:

  • Prepare for Sessions: Before each session, take a few minutes to think about what you would like to focus on that day. Maybe that means writing a short list of topics you want to discuss or an activity you want to do! It could also mean that you want your therapist to guide the session – it’s up to you!
  • Communicate Your Goals: In addition to long-term therapy goals, you can also create short-term goals for your sessions – Let your therapist know what you’d like to address in your appointment. Your therapist is responsible for helping you stay on track with your goals for the session!
  • Be Open and Honest: Vulnerability can be difficult to practice in therapy. It’s important to practice expressing vulnerability in order to build rapport with your therapist! This includes discussing any concerns that may arise within your relationship with your therapist – Addressing any issues you’re experiencing with each other will lead to repair and increased trust!
  • Practice: Be an active participant in your sessions such as by asking questions or asking for feedback from your therapist. It’s also important to practice any skills or recommendations in between sessions. Doing so will lead to more meaningful insight and help you reach your goals!

Be patient with yourself as you navigate therapy for the first time, or a relationship with a new therapist. You are in charge of your care, and these tips will empower you to co-create the most beneficial therapeutic experience for yourself.
